Angelica (Angelica archangelica)

Description:

Angelica is a biennial or short-lived perennial herb that possesses a stunning presence with its tall, sturdy stems and large, aromatic, and deeply divided leaves. Its enchanting umbrella-like clusters of tiny greenish-white flowers are a sight to behold, capturing the imagination and stirring curiosity. The plant can reach impressive heights, often exceeding six feet, making it a majestic addition to any garden or medicinal herb collection.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate

  • Position: does best in partial shade or dappled sunlight; can tolerate full sun, but may benefit from some protection during the hottest part of the day, especially in warmer climates.

  • Soil: moist, rich, and well-draining; prefers loamy or sandy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (pH 5.5 to 7.0). Amending the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can help improve its fertility and moisture retention.

  • Water: moderate water needs; ensure the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged; regular watering is particularly crucial during dry spells or in regions with low rainfall.

  • Spacing: best to provide ample space to grow, as they can reach heights of six feet or more. Provide approximately 60 - 90cm of spacing between individual plants to allow for proper airflow and prevent overcrowding.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds in early spring or fall, as they usually require a cold stratification period for germination; press the seeds lightly into the soil, but do not cover them completely, as they require light for germination.

  • Harvest: The roots, leaves, stems, and seeds of Angelica have different medicinal uses and harvesting times. The roots are typically harvested in the fall of the plant's second year. Leaves and stems can be harvested in the first year, while the seeds are collected after the flowers have dried and turned to seed heads.
