California Poppy (Eshshcoltzia californica)

Description:

California Poppy is a delicate and vibrant flowering plant native to California, USA. It is renowned for its striking orange or yellow blooms and its ability to thrive in various environments.

Californian Poppy is a self-seeding perennial herb that forms a low-growing mound of feathery, blue-green foliage. The leaves are finely divided and deeply lobed, giving them an attractive, fern-like appearance. The plant reaches a height of 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm), and its stems are slender and slightly hairy.

The iconic flowers of Californian Poppy are its most distinctive feature. The cup-shaped blooms are typically vivid orange, but they can also range in colour from yellow to cream or pink. Each flower has four petals that unfurl during the day and close at night or during cloudy weather. The flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, adding to the plant's allure.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: all climates; can tolerate dry and arid conditions. It is typically grown as an annual in colder regions.

  • Position: full sun with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Soil: tolerates various soil types, incl. sandy, loamy, nutrient-poor, dry to mesic soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (around 6.0 to 7.0).

  • Water: low to moderate water requirements; drought-tolerant once established; water sparingly during hot and dry spells.

  • Spacing: thinning is not generally needed.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly into the garden bed in early spring or autumn; disturb the soil then either lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil or tamp them directly into the soil, and keep them consistently moist until germination occurs, usually within 10 to 14 days.

  • Maintenance: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming. The plant self-seeds readily, so it may produce volunteers in subsequent seasons.

  • Harvest: whole flowering plant from spring to autumn.
