Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)

Description:

Clary sage is an herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is prized for its fragrant leaves and attractive bracts & flowers, as well as its various culinary, medicinal, and cosmetic uses. Clary sage is a robust plant that forms a clump of erect, square stems with velvety, heart-shaped leaves. The leaves are large, wrinkled, and greyish-green in colour. Reaching heights of 2 to 5 feet (60 to 150 cm), clary sage produces showy flower spikes, typically in shades of lavender, pink, or white. The flowers are arranged in whorls and have prominent bracts in the pre-flowering stage that give them a unique and ornamental appearance. The leaves, bracts and flowers of are known for their strong, euphoric scent, which could be described as musky or heavenly.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate to subtropical climates and is typically hardy.

  • Position: full sun to part shade with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day; some shade during the hottest part of the day can be beneficial in warmer climates.

  • Soil: well-draining, fertile soil; can tolerate different soil types, including sandy or loamy soil. The ideal soil pH range is slightly acidic to neutral (around 6.0 to 7.5).

  • Water: average water needs; water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry, providing enough water to thoroughly moisten the root zone.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 18 to 23 inches (45 to 60 cm) apart to allow them room to spread.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds and tamp directly into the garden bed in early spring or autumn; keep them moist and in the light until germination (typically 1 - 3 weeks). Cuttings can be taken from established plants in spring or early summer.

  • Harvest: when the plant is in its peak growth stage with bract development, typically just before or during flowering in their second year (usually).
