Clary sage is a robust plant that forms a clump of erect, square stems with velvety, heart-shaped leaves. The leaves are large, wrinkled, and greyish-green in colour. Reaching heights of 2 to 5 feet (60 to 150 cm), clary sage produces showy flower spikes, typically in shades of lavender, pink, or white. The flowers are arranged in whorls and have prominent bracts in the pre-flowering stage that give them a unique and ornamental appearance. The leaves, bracts and flowers of are known for their strong, euphoric scent, which could be described as musky or heavenly.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate to subtropical climates and is typically hardy.

  • Position: full sun to part shade with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day; some shade during the hottest part of the day can be beneficial in warmer climates.
