Bergamont (Lemon) Seeds

$4.50

Lemon Bergamont (Monarda citriodora)

Description:

Lemon bergamot is a short-lived perennial or hardy annual known for its vibrant blooms and distinct lemony fragrance. It is native to North America and belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). Lemon bergamot typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 feet (30 to 90 cm) and features slender, square stems covered with lance-shaped leaves. Its flowers are the highlight, appearing in dense clusters at the top of the stems. Each flower has a tubular shape with a vibrant pinkish-purple colour and a protruding pistil, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. When crushed or brushed against, the foliage releases a refreshing lemony aroma, hence the name "lemon bergamot."

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: loves warmth & heat, but will still thrive in cool-temperate environments when protected from frosts.

  • Position: full sun exposure for at least six to eight hours a day

  • Soil: prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil; will tolerate sandy, loamy, or clay soil but thrives best in soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH level (around 6.0 to 7.0).

  • Water: prefers consistently moist soil but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions; water deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry; avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot and other issues.

  • Spacing: allow approximately 30cm of space between each plant to ensure proper air circulation and prevent overcrowding.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly into the garden bed or seed trays/pots after the last frost and the soil has warmed up in the spring; press the seeds lightly into the soil surface without covering them completely, as they require light for germination.

  • Harvest: typically harvested in full bloom; avoid harvesting more than one-third of the plant's foliage at a time, as this can stress the plant; leave enough foliage behind to sustain its growth.
