Mixed seed of Italian & Greek Oregano (Origanum spp.)

Description:

Oregano is a perennial herb, belonging to the Lamiaceae family, known for its aromatic leaves and culinary uses. It is native to southern Europe, north Africa, and western Asia and has remained a staple in many traditional dishes and medicinal applications for thousands of years. It features small, oval-shaped leaves that are dark green and often slightly fuzzy. The leaves grow on square stems, and when crushed, they emit a strong and pleasant aroma. Oregano produces clusters of small, white, pink or purple flowers in the summer, attracting bees and other pollinators.

This seed packet is a mix of both varieties, in the future we endeavour to harvest the two types individually to offer you more clarity between the two types as their flavour profiles vary greatly and may be desired for specific purposes.

Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum, formerly O. heracleoticum) is known for its slightly larger leaves, white flowers and robust and pungent flavour with hints of camphor. It has a slightly bitter and peppery taste and white flowers. Italian oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. majoricum) is often described as having a more delicate and floral taste compared to Greek oregano with hints of citrus and pine, displaying pinkish flowers.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate to warmer climates but can adapt to various regions.

  • Position: full sun exposure with at least 6 hours a day; can tolerate partial shade but may produce fewer aromatic oils and have reduced growth potential when planted very shady areas.

  • Soil: well-draining, moderately fertile soil although will tolerate sandy, loamy, or rocky soil; ideal soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral, ranging from 6.0 to 7.0.

  • Water: low to moderate water needs; prefers slightly dry conditions and can tolerate drought once established.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45cm) apart.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly into the garden bed or on seed flats/pots after last frost or start them indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the predicted last frost date. Scatter seed on soil surface and tamp securely (light-dependent germinator usually within 1 to 3 weeks).

  • Harvest: harvest leaves once the plant has reached a height of at least 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15cm) and has developed a sufficient amount of foliage. For optimal flavour and aroma, it's best to harvest the leaves just before the plant flowers. Harvesting stimulates new leaf growth.
