Poppy (Papaver somniferum), Ragged Red - Open Pollinated

Description:

Poppy is an overwintering annual flowering plant, belonging to the Papaveraceae family, known for its showy and delicate flowers, as well as its culinary and medicinal uses. It is native to the Mediterranean and west Asia. Poppy is a herbaceous plant with erect stems that can reach a height of 2 to 4 feet (60 to 120cm). It features large, papery flowers that come in a variety of colours, including shades of white, pink, red, and purple. The flowers have a distinctive cup-shaped appearance with prominent dark centres. After flowering, the plant produces seed pods, commonly referred to as poppy pods or poppy heads, which contain tiny, kidney-shaped seeds.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate; prefers cool summers and mild winters; can tolerate some heat but may struggle in extremely hot and humid conditions.

  • Position: full sun exposure to ensure proper flowering and seed production, with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Soil: well-draining, rich, moist soil but can adapt to various soil types, incl. loamy or sandy soil; ideal soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral, ranging from 6.0 to 7.5.

  • Water: moderate water needs; somewhat drought-tolerant once established.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) apart, depending on the specific variety and desired density.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly into the garden bed in late autumn through to very early spring, as they require cold stratification for germination; press the seeds lightly into the soil and cover them with a very thin layer of soil for protection.
