Rue (Ruta graveolens)

Description:

Rue is a perennial herb, belonging to the Rutaceae family, known for its distinctive blue-green foliage and strong aroma. Rue is a small shrub native to the Mediterranean, that typically grows to a height of about 50 to 60cm. It has woody stems and deeply divided, fern-like leaves that are covered in fine hairs and emit a strong, pungent scent when crushed. Rue produces small, yellow flowers that bloom in summer, forming clusters at the top of the stems. The flowers are followed by small, rounded fruits containing seeds.

CAUTION: After handling the plant, it is advisable to wash your hands or any other body parts that come into contact with it using soap, as the plant may trigger photosensitive dermatitis in susceptible individuals.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate; prefers warm and sunny climates.

  • Position: full sun exposure for at least 6 to 8 hours a day; can tolerate some shade, but it prefers bright, direct sunlight for optimal growth.

  • Soil: well-draining, moderately fertile, moist soil; can adapt to sandy, loamy, or rocky soil types; ideal soil pH should be slightly alkaline, ranging from 7.0 to 8.0.

  • Water: moderate water needs; water the plant deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60cm) apart.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds just below soil surface in seed flats/pots in spring or autumn and tamp securely. Keep evenly moist until germination (usually 2 to 3 weeks); alternatively, take stem cuttings in spring or early summer and root them in well-draining soil or water.
