Siberian Motherwort (Leonurus sibericus), Marijuanilla, Honeyweed

Description:

Siberian motherwort is a biennial herbaceous plant, belonging to the Lamiaceae family, known for its medicinal properties and distinctive appearance. It is sometimes lesser known compared to its smaller growing cousin, common Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), however has similar actions and medicinal qualities. Native to Siberia, China, Korea and Taiwan, this type of motherwort can grow to a height 7 feet (215cm) in full flower. It has square-shaped stems with deeply lobed, palmate leaves that are dark green and slightly hairy. The leaves have toothed edges and emit a strong, somewhat lemony aroma when crushed, producing clusters of small, pink-purple flowers that bloom in the summer.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate.

  • Position: full sun to partial shade; tends to flower more profusely with increased exposure to sunlight.

  • Soil: well-draining, fertile soil but will tolerate sandy or loamy soil types as well; ideal soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral, ranging from 6.0 to 7.5.

  • Water: moderate water needs; water the plant regularly, providing enough moisture to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60cm) apart.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly into the garden bed or seed flats/pots in spring or autumn. Barely cover then tamp securely and keep moist until germination (usually within 1 to 3 weeks).

  • Harvest: harvest leaves as needed throughout the growing season or whole flowering plant when majority of flowers are open (leave some for the bees).
