Sweet Annie is a beautifully aromatic, self-seeding annual herb, belonging to the Asteraceae family, gaining popularity in the past decade or so for its efficacious antimalarial and antiviral properties. It is native to temperate regions of Asia, particularly China, growing on forest edges, woodlands and grasslands. wormwood has naturalised in many parts of the world. Sweet Annie typically grows to a height of 3 to 9 feet (90 to 270cm) and 2 - 3 feet (60 - 90cm) wide.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: adaptable to a wide range of climates and is tolerant to light to moderate frosts.

  • Position: full sun but will tolerate part shade.

  • Soil: prefers well-draining, sandy, loamy soils but will tolerate various soil types; ideal soil pH should be slightly acidic neutral (around 5.5 to 7.5).

  • Water: moderate water needs during dry spells but is relatively drought-tolerant once established.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90cm) apart.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly onto the garden bed or seed flats/pots surface in early to mid-spring and tamp securely onto the soil surface (light-dependent germinator).

  • Harvest: Late summer to early autumn before blooms fully open in full bloom.
