Mapacho or ‘wild tobacco’ (Nicotiana rustica)

Description:

Mapacho or ‘wild tobacco’ (Nicotiana rustica), an annual member of the Solanaecea (Nightshade) family, has been naturalised throughout the world yet is a native to Mexico, southern North America & northern South America. N. rustica, although known as ‘wild tobacco’, is actually not derived from a wild cultivar but is thought to have developed through hybridisation and further cultivation by the indigenous peoples of Mexico in pre-Columbian times, considered to be an heirloom species. The two species speculated to have birthed ‘wild tobacco’ are either Nicotiana paniculata or Nicotiana undulata. This species typically grows to a height of 1 to 4 feet (60 to 150 cm) and spreads about 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) wide, 90 days to maturity.

NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION: Natural pesticide & ceremonial purposes only.

CAUTION: It is crucial to note that N. rustica contains higher levels of nicotine and other alkaloids compared to common tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum)and should be handled with care. Avoid contact with the sap or ingesting any part of the plant. Keep it away from children and pets.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: adaptable to a wide range of climates and is tolerant to light to moderate frosts.

  • Position: full sun to partial shade but can tolerate a variety of light conditions; performs best with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Soil: various soil types incl. sandy, loamy, or clay soils but prefers nitrogen-rich, well-draining soil; ideal soil pH should be slightly alkaline neutral (around 6.5 to 8.0).

  • Water: low - moderate water needs; relatively drought-tolerant once established; mulching is ideal to protect any exposed roots overtime.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60cm) apart.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly onto the garden bed or seed flats/pots surface in the spring or indoors 6 - 8 weeks before last expected frosts. Tamp securely onto the soil surface (light-dependent germinator). Germination should occur within 10 - 14 days.
